During an activity to put a worksite together, Michel uses the construction of a school as an authentic situation to help students learn to plan. In the Managing Worksites course, students learn project planning. Additionally, when students engage in Civil Engineering job shadowing internships, these students are able to understand when the general contractors show the students a project schedule for the worksite. Since 2012, a number of teachers in Civil Engineering at the Collège Montmorency have been using ProjectLibre for the courses entitled Managing Worksites ( Administrer des chantiers) and Develop an Integrative Project in Civil Engineering ( Élaborer un projet synthèse en génie civil).

Project management software is widely used in the building sector, whether it be in architecture, estimating costs or evaluating projects. (Source: Michel Bélanger) ProjectLibre in Civil Engineering You can see the name of each task, the duration of the task and predecessor or successive tasks. This type of tool is useful for all sorts of projects, including:ĭevelopment and implementation of a new service In addition to creating the project schedule (Gantt chart), this software helps you to estimate the costs associated with the project once you have entered the hourly rates of resources required to execute each task (material, equipment, labour, etc.). The software allows you to create Gannt charts, which are diagrams of the project flow that allow you to visualize a timeline with:

He uses the software to show students how to create a project schedule by sequencing and ordering tasks with the objective of evaluating the time and cost to run the project. Michel Bélanger, a teacher at the Collège Montmorency, and many of his colleagues use ProjectLibre for several of their courses in the Civil Engineering Technology program. Visually identify where a hiccup would prevent your team from reaching its goals.ProjectLibre is an open source software that is useful for creating project schedules. Quickly see which tasks can be rescheduled without affecting larger deadlines. Prioritize which tasks must be completed within their estimated window to avoid delays in your project. Note: Add tasks with no time gaps in between the start and end dates to the sequence that leads to the end of the entire group to be included in the critical path. The chain of tasks in the critical path may include time gaps or be missing dependency links. If Hide Weekends is enabled, then hidden weekends might break a critical path. Why is the Critical path shorter than expected? Note: Because the last task in the group is responsible for the entire group's completion date, it will always be highlighted. The other reason this may occur is no dependency chain has been attached to that last task in the group. This is likely because there is a gap in time between this task and the rest of the tasks in your group. Your Gantt view will be updated instantly!įAQ Why is only the last task in my group (Space, Folder, or List) highlighted?

If the last task in the critical path is dependent on another task, and there is no time gap in between them, each of the tasks will be added to the path (shown in red). It then looks back from the last task to see which dependent task is blocking the deadline from being completed. The critical path checks all tasks on the chart and determines the set that would affect the overall project deadline if adjusted. Slack Time is displayed as a dashed bar indicating how much room a task has before it starts affecting the overall project timeline. Slack Time helps you visualize all the wiggle room in your project. Unlimited uses of Gantt tools are included on the Business, Business Plus, and Enterprise Plans
